Matteo Bertelli
International Association of Medical Genetics (MAGI), Italy

Graduated in Medicine from Brescia University with an experimental thesis. He specialised in Medical Genetics at the same university, receiving a research doctorate in Medical Biotechnologies in 2008 from Siena University with an experimental thesis on Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. He has published about 20 papers in impact factor journals and has presented research at many scientific conferences, including those of the Italian Society for Medical Genetics, of which he is a member. Since 2006, he has been president of the International Association of Medical Genetics (MAGI) which he founded. MAGI is a pilot centre for the diagnosis of rare genetic diseases. It is active in Italy, Europe and developing countries. It has two diagnosis and research laboratories specialised in rare diseases at Bolzano and Rovereto, a centre in Tirana, Albania and a laboratory in the Krasnoyarsk State Medical University, Russia. Its customers are centres of excellence in clinical consultancy for hereditary primary lymphedema, hereditary retinal dystrophies, hereditary vascular malformations, Mendelian non-syndromic obesity and hereditary lipodystrophy. For many years, MAGI has been strengthening network relationships and building understanding of rare diseases in the European supranational context.
Dr. Bertelli collaborates with the Association of Catholic Physicians and through MAGI established a project that offers study grants to young medical and biology graduates from developing countries.
